it is monday, september 20th, 2010. a live look outside right now. 5:00 a.m. it is9 degrees. nice, refreshing start to your workweek. now tom kierein joins us to tell us th kind of day we'll have. >> this morning we are morning. and this monday we're starting off thankfully with no weather to mourn. we have a dry sky this morning. we really do need some rain. right now it's in the 60s throughout most of the region, shenandoah valley, arngton, fairfax, mid-60s. near 70 in washington near the bay waters. mountains, chilly morning, near 50, much of west virginia and western maryland. and we have a few clouds drifting in from the north and west that will be with us this morning. otherwise, lots of sunshine today. we'll have afternoon highs climbing to near 80 degrees. we have low humidity and northwest breeze 20 miles per hour. overnight it will be clear and

chilly, in fact. in the 40s throughout much of the region. afternoon highs intothe upper 70s with bright sun on tuesday. wednesday, increasing clouds and warming up into the upper 80s. and then moisture wednesday night, thursday, may bring us passing showers with highs, again, hot on thursday, in the upper 80s. morning lows near 70. jerry, good morning. how is our traffic? >> good morning, tom. good morning, everyone. smooth sailing. live pictures of interstate 270 from i-70 toward the capital beltway. no worries. southbound has been wrapped up. a couple spots clearing up on the northbound side. in from the west along interstate 66 toward the capital beltway from fair oaks in, light volume. west of that point it's beginning to pick up. >> thanks very much, jerry. students areenjoying an unexpected day off today because

of a water main break there. chesapea middle school, chesapeake high school and folger mckenzie high school are closed because of that water main break. allther schools will open on time. robbed and assaulted off the campus of university of maryland, college park. it happened yesterday morning at the parking lot of the college park shopping center. megan mcgrath joins us with more on this attack. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, joe that. shopping center is well lit. surprising. there have been several such robberies that have taken place since school began. six since august. all crimesave occurred in the early morning. they involve several suspects. in some cases they got violent and beat the victims. police are warning students not

to walk alone particularly between 2:00 and4:00 in the morning. the latest happened at 4:30 sunday morning. the victim was walking in the parking lot at the college park shopping ceer, 7300lock baltimore avenue. three suspects jumped the victim from behind. he was assaulted and then robbed. now, the vtim in this most recent case wasot a university of maryland student, although some students have been victims in several other crimes. last week police did make an arrest in o of the robberies, a robbery that occurred in early august. still looking for two accomplices in that crime. despit that arrest, we are still seeing the robberies continuing. again, the most recent happening early sunday morning here in the parkingot of the shopping center. an alert has gone out to students. they're asked to be on guard, not to walk alone in the early morning hours. joe, back to you. >> megan mcgrath reporting live. today police will try to

determine who killed an armed suspect during a shoot-out with police. it happened around 6:00 yesterday morning in the 200 block of market street. police officers approached a man with a rifle following a domestic situation and exchanged gunfire. the man died during the incident. they're still trying to figure out whether the officer killed him or whether the suspect turned the gun on himself. the doctor who was shot during a standoff at johns cop minutes last week is in fair but stable condition. he was shot in the stomach by the son of an olderly patient. paul lost his composure after cohen delivered news of his mother's condition. he shot cohen, killed his mother, and then turned the gun on himself. now to the gulf oil disaster. the oil well has noween sealed permanently with cement. the incident commander admiral thad allen says the well poses no further threat this seal comes five months after an explosion that killed

11 workers and spilled some 206 million gallons of oil into the gulf of mexico. this morning the final cleanup is under way. oil does continue apparently to wash up on to the shores and beaches. down to one play, again, for the redskins. this time they weren't the ones celebrating. the houston texans nailed a field goal to seal a win, 30-27. they thought they had the game won with their on field goal. but texas coach calle a time-out just before that kick. on second try, the kicker missed wide right giving the texans the ball back. and then mike shanahan says it was a disappointing way to lose, but he was happy with the way the teamplayed. >> bottom line is they got it done and we did it. you've got to go back and be pretty tough on yourself. the thing i was pleased with is our football team played hard throughout the game. ust made a few too many mistakes at crucial times. >> the biggest mistake was

letting the texans back into the game. they gave up a 17-point third quarter lead. ouch! a final good-bye to political activist and scholar ron walters. a funeral service will be held at shiloh baptist church in washington. services began at 110 ths morning. memorial service was held yesterday at howard university. dr. walters spent 25 years at howard, but was known to millions around the country for his weekly column on race and politics. jordan and the reverend jesse jackson were among many at the memorial service. he died september 10th after a longbattle with lung cancer. and he appeared many times here on news 4. giving his opinions on politics, incisive, brilliant and wonderful, wonderful person. this morning we have a traffic alert before you head out the door. if you're driving through tyson's corner, you may want to give yourself extra time. a new traffic pattern.

good morning. i'm tom kierein. live view of the washington monument on this monday morning. under a mostly clear sky. off to a pleasant start as we get back to wo and school. temperatures around the region are comfortable. in the 60s now in the shenandoah valley and throughout most of maryland and virginia, the eastern shore. wasngton, near 70. near the waters it's near 70. elsewhere, eye cool morning. chilly in west virginia. t's just in the 50s there. over theast 12 hurs we have had a few clouds drifting through. we'll have our temperatures today climbing to near 80 with quite a bit of sunshine. overnight tonight should be clear. a chilly start to tuesday. should be in the 40s throughout much of the region tomorrow

5:14. here's the top stories in the ws this morning. after an explosion five months ago today, the deaths of 11 workers and 206 million gallons of oil gushed into the gulf of mexico, the broken well is finally sealed off forever. the cleanup does continue but crews are clearing out. some residents fear bp will leave before all the oil is removed. a law student and green party candidate is hospitalized this morning the she was hit while riding her bike sunday

if you're driving through tyson's corner, give yourself extra time. there's a new traffic pattern. tracee wilkins has more on what you need to know before you head out the door. >> reporter: good morning eun. this is the dull let project. now the busiest intersection in tyson's corner is going to be affected. 123 to rote 7 westbound. they have closed that ramp for the next year. here's a look at what your new ramp looks like. drivers who use 123 to route 7, you will now have to access route 7 from this new exit just south of international drive and the marriott courtyard hotel. that's how you will know. it will take you to frontage road and turn right on route 7. if you miss the ramp, continue south on 123, turn right on old courthouse road which intersects in both directions. it's important that you pay close attention to the signage. they'll have officers out here in the morning. it will help to direct traic.

american hikers is out of iran. they have requested a meeting with mahmoud ahmadinejad. he's in the united states this week. yesterday the only americn freed returned to the u.s. saah shourd called for the release of her fiancee shane bauer and their friend josh fattal. >> i walked out of prison with my spirit bruised but unbroken and i am more detmined than ever that shane and josh, god willin will soon walk out the same way. >> shourd spent more than 13 months in one of iran's st notorious prison. the three were arrested while hiking in 2009 and had been accused of spying. the iranian government released shourd on humanitarian grounds. meantime, ahmadinejad met with the united nations secretary-general yesterday. he's scheduled to speak at a summit today and address the general assembly later this

week. several groups orgazing protests criticizing the human rights situation in iran and its nuclear program. a group of u.s. muslim organizations are meeting over the mosque controversy in new york city. organizers hope it will address the public outrage over the islamic center slated forround zero. the group plans to hold a news conference later today. bermuda is still feeling the effects of hurricane igor. strong surf, winds and rain have been lashing the island since it came ashore yesterday. igor was threatening to make a direct hit but the eye passed offshore of the island. winds diminished to 75 miles per hour. igor could be downgraded to a tropical storm later today. and 75 miles per hour, that's just bare there a hurricane, right? >> it's probably going to be diminishing as the day

gunfire. the man dieduring the incident. investigators say they're still trying to figure out whether the officer killed him or whether the suspect turned the gun on himself. fair and stable condition this morning. dr. david cohen was shot by the son of an olderly patient thursday morning. the gunman, 50-year-old paul partis started shooting after cohen delivered news of his mother's condition. he barricaded himself in the hospital room and then killed his mother and then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life. it has happened again. a man robbed and assaulted in th early morning hours just off campus from the university of maryland. this time the attack came in a shopping center parking lot. news 4's megan mcgrath joins u with more on this developing story. good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning, eun. it happened in the parking lot of the college park shopping center. it's a prett well-lit area.

that didn't stop the robbers from attacking early sunday morning. now, there have been a number of similar robberies in the area around the university of maryland. all of them have taken place off campus. in the immediate area surrounding the university of marynd, si such incidents since august 8th. there's a similar pattern with all these crimes. they all happened early in the mornig. self suspects involved. some cases those suspects have become violent. they have beaten the victim. sometimes weapons have been used. it's unclear if there's any connection between these crimes. police are warning students not to walk alone in the early morning hours, particularly after 2:00 in the morning. the latest incident happened at 4:30 in the morning on sunday. police say the victim was walking through the parking lot. three suspects jumped him from behind. he was assaulted and then robbed. now, the victim in the most recent case is not a university of maryland student, although

students have been victims in several other crimes. last week police made an arrest in one robbery that took place in early august. they're still looking for two accomplices in that crime. even with that arrest we are still seeing robberies tking place in the area. so of course students a being asked to be particularly careful not to walk alone in the early morning hours and to report suspicious activity. well have more coming up in the next half hour. eun, back to you. >> see you then. megan mcgrath live in college park. megan, thank you. now to the gulf oil disaster. teams are leaving the area after sealing the deep horizon oil well. jay gray explains what is next from venice, louisiana. >> reporter: it began april 20th with a massive fireball and deadly flames cutting through the night air. as the deepwater horizon rig exploded and collapsed, 11 lives were lost.

and oil began to seep into the gulf, the start of the worst spill in u.s. history. now, 154 days later, government scientists say the final seal, 74 barrels of cement, is holding tight and that the well will never leak again. president obama acknowledged the work that's been done an perhaps the more difficult job that lies ahead in a written statement which says in part, we will continuto work closely with the people of the gulf to rebuild their livelihoods and restore the environment that supportshem. my administration will see our communities, our businesses and our fragile ecosystems through this difficult tim difficulties that continue to wash up along the gulf coast. cleanup teams fight everyday in plaquemines parrish. but it seems right now the oil is winning the battle there. >> we can't fix this on our own. we cat rebuild this on our

police say the driver, who at first didn't realize she had hit someone, did not remain on the scene. >> she is unconscious. she suffered massive injuries, massive head trauma, broken ribs, lost a kidney in the surgery, broken knees. >> pedigrew was struck near the intersection at 5:30 in the morning on campus way. the driver thought she hit a dog or deer. once she returned home, she discovered the bike under her cadillac escalade a called authorities. her mother has a lot of questions for investigators. >> clearly, if you don't see the person you should have seen the bicycle. why would you hit someone and then just keep going? definitely searching for answers. >> pedigrew was a third-year student at the university of miami law school. she took a break to run against barba mccallsky. here's part of an interview she did with maryland public

television, now on youtube. >> why have you decided toun for the u.s. senate? >> i don't feel our elected officials are responsive to e needs of their respective constituents. her mother said she was training for a half in man competition set for mid-november in miami. now it is suspended as she fights for her life at prince george's hospital center. >> i just ask everyone keep her in their prayers and that s will get strong and certainly have a full recovery. >> maryland state police have seized the bicycle as well as the cadillac escalade as part of their investigation. they said there's no indication that alcohol played a role in the crash. at this point no charges have been filed. in largo, darcy spencer, news 4. all 13 membs of a small california religious group are safe this morning after they disappeare over the weekend. there had been fear they were planning a mass suicide. the leader of the group was

drivers who use 123 to route 7, you will now have to access route 7 from this new exit just south international drive and the marriott courtyard hotel. when you see that, go ahead and get over to the right. that's going to take you on to route 7 westbound which will take you on to frontage road. and you will have to turn right to get to route 7 west. if you miss the ramp, ctinue south on 123, turn right on old courthouse road which intersects with route 7 in bo directions. now, there's plenty of signage up here to direct folks. and they will also have police out here in just a little bit to help direct thecars. the bottom line is this, if you'rerying to get to route 7 westbound from 123, when you see
